Luiz Felipe Scolari has signed a new contract with Chinese Super League champions Guangzhou Evergrande, the club announced on Monday, just a day after the team clinched a record sixth straight league title.
Scolari's existing deal was due to expire at the end of November, but after Guangzhou cancelled their preseason contract with Marcello Lippi to allow the Italian to take over the China national team, the Brazilian World Cup winner has seen his time with Evergrande extended.
The former Brazil, Portugal and Chelsea coach has signed a one-year deal with the option of an additional year to remain at Tianhe Stadium, and he will lead the club on another attempt to claim the Asian title the club won in 2013 -- under Lippi -- and in 2015.
"From now on there will be very few teams who can win so many Chinese Super League titles in a row because the clubs are more evenly balanced and that is because there is more quality in the league," said Scolari.
"This year was very difficult because our national team players were busy and we had six or seven players who were away a lot and that caused us some problems in the team.
"In the next four or five years there will be four or five teams who can win the title so it will be very difficult for Evergrande to keep winning."
The 67-year-old joined Guangzhou in June 2015 and steered the club to the Asian Champions League title and the Chinese Super League before successfully defending the domestic crown this season, winning the title with two games to spare from Jiangsu Suning.
Guangzhou could complete a league and cup double next month with Scolari and his team also in the final of the CFA Cup, where they will meet Jiangsu.
