China ban Wang Shenchao for year for wearing a necklace

China defender Wang Shenchao will miss the Asian Cup next January after being handed a 12-month ban by the Chinese Football Association (CFA) for wearing a necklace during a national team game.

Wang, who plays for Chinese Super League side Shanghai SIPG, was shown on video pulling a necklace out of his socks and wearing it after coming on as a second-half substitute in China's 1-0 friendly win over Myanmar on May 26.

SIPG, who are currently atop the Chinese top-flight standings, have handed the 29-year-old a fine of 20,000 yuan ($3,125).

The South China Morning Post said that Wang's harsh punishment comes as a result of the full-back breaching the rules set by FIFA and the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

The Laws of the Game say: "All items of jewellery (necklaces, rings, bracelets, earrings, leather, rubber bands etc.) are strictly forbidden and must be removed," but only includes guidelines to issue a yellow card if the player declines to remove an item during a game.

The Asian Cup will be held from Jan. 5 to Feb. 1, 2019, in the United Arab Emirates.
