Chile close to hiring Leon boss Juan Antonio Pizzi as new coach - reports

Leon boss Juan Antonio Pizzi is close to becoming the new head coach of reigning Copa America champion Chile, according to a report in AS Chile.

The report indicates the Argentina-born, former Spain international could be introduced as the new Chile coach as early as Monday or Tuesday, after an agreement over the basic contract was reached on Thursday night.

"Only details remain" to seal the deal, according to sources inside the Chilean federation consulted by AS Chile. ESPN Mexico reported it could be announced as early as Friday afternoon.

On Friday morning, Pizzi told awaiting reporters that he didn't want to speak. The 47-year-old has a contract until the end of June, according to ESPN Mexico.

Pizzi has had experience in Chilean football after successful spells with Santiago Morning and Universidad Catolica between 2009-11.

Former Mexico coach Miguel Herrera had also been linked to the post, which Jorge Sampaoli vacated on Jan. 19 after a bitter disagreement with the Chilean federation.

Leon is scheduled to play Tigres away on Saturday in the fourth round of Clausura matches.
