Alexis Sanchez: Uruguay player said sorry after Copa America clash

Chile's Alexis Sanchez has said a Uruguay player apologised to him in the aftermath of the controversial Copa America quarterfinal between the sides.

Uruguay, who lost 1-0, had two players sent off as their defence of the trophy came to an end.

Arsenal star Sanchez was clattered by a Jorge Fucile challenge in the closing moments, with the Uruguay player sent off after receiving a second yellow card.

His dismissal sparked flashpoints between players and officials from both teams.

AFP said Sanchez told reporters that a Uruguay player -- who he did not name -- had said sorry.

"They like to fight, argue... one player told me in the first half: 'Move, you wimp,' but then later he said to me: 'I am sorry,'" Sanchez said.

"He said to me: 'That'll do, I kicked the s--- out of you.' And I said: 'All right, but you could have caused an injury and that's not what football's about.'"

Uruguay's Edinson Cavani was sent off for retaliating to an incident in which defender Gonzalo Jara appeared to poke the striker's backside.

Cavani received a second yellow card after raising his hand to Jara, who slumped to the ground, and Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez -- sent to the stands in the aftermath of the challenge on Sanchez -- defended his player.

"You can see what happened and what the challenge was. I refer you to the television and photos of it -- it is all there," he said.

"I can see that the referee has not seen it, but the linesman had to be able to see it from his position."

Alberto Lozada, a member of CONMEBOL's disciplinary panel, said on Thursday that the local governing body "will open an investigation" that could lead to a suspension for the Chilean player.

Chile will play either Bolivia or Peru in the semifinals as they step up their bid to win a first-ever Copa.
