Chile's Arturo Vidal to face new charge stemming from car crash - report

Chile midfielder Arturo Vidal will face a new charge stemming from his drunk-driving arrest last week, AFP is reporting.

Citing a judicial source, the outlet reports the midfielder will be arraigned on July 8 on a charge of threatening an officer.

Vidal, who is currently with Chile at the Copa America, is alleged to have gone on a profanity-laced tirade directed at deputy sergeant Osvaldo Pezoa before being handcuffed for crashing his Ferrari while under the influence of alcohol last week.

Vidal had his driver's licence confiscated and was ordered to report to the Chilean consulate in Milan monthly. The judge also allotted 120 days for a complete investigation of the matter.

According to the report, Vidal would face a 61-day suspended jail sentence if convicted of the threatening Pezoa.

The Juventus star was kept in police custody overnight after the incident and apologised the following morning.

"I had two drinks and then the accident, which you all know about. I endangered the life of my wife and that of many people. I am very sorry," he told reporters. "I am very ashamed. I want to thank all those who supported me during this time. I want to ask for forgiveness from my colleagues, the players, the coaches and the whole country. I will do my best so that we can be champions."
