Ched Evans joins Chesterfield on one-year contract

Ched Evans has signed a 12-month contract with League One club Chesterfield.

The former Sheffield United, Norwich City and Manchester City player will join up with Danny Wilson's Chesterfield squad on July 1 for preseason training.

"We are delighted to have secured the services of an outstanding footballer, who is now keen to get back to work and score goals," club chairman Dave Allen said in an official statement.

"Danny Wilson knows Ched very well, having previously managed him at Sheffield United. Chris Morgan, our first team coach, also speaks highly of him from their time together at Bramall Lane."

Evans, 27, is awaiting retrial for rape after his initial guilty conviction was quashed by the court of appeal following the presentation of fresh evidence.

"Chesterfield Football Club have given a great deal of thought to this signing and, following the court's decision, we are in no doubt that Ched Evans should be welcomed back into his profession as a professional footballer," Chesterfield's official statement said.

Evans has pleaded not guilty and his trial will take place on Oct. 4, 2016.
