Chelsea's Drinkwater charged with drink-driving after car crash

Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has been charged with drink-driving after being involved in a car crash in Greater Manchester on Monday.

Drinkwater reportedly crashed his Range Rover into a Skoda on a country road in Hale after leaving a party in the early hours of Monday morning, prior to Chelsea's 2-0 win over West Ham at Stamford Bridge.

The 29-year-old and the woman accompanying him were both reportedly treated for minor injuries at the scene.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: "A 29-year-old from Nether Alderley has been charged with drink driving following an incident in Cheshire.

"Danny Drinkwater, of Bollington Lane, was arrested shortly after 12.30 a.m. on Monday 8 April following a one-vehicle collision on Ashley Road in Mere.

"He has been released on unconditional bail and is set to appear at Stockport Magistrates' Court on Monday 13 May."

Chelsea are yet to confirm whether Drinkwater, who has not made a single appearance for the club since the Community Shield against Manchester City in August, will face disciplinary action as a result of the charge.

A club spokesman told ESPN FC: "We are aware of reports but we will want to establish all of the facts before commenting."
