Chelsea forward Pedro suffers suspected concussion in Arsenal friendly

BEIJING -- Chelsea manager Antonio Conte says Pedro Rodriguez suffered a suspected concussion during Saturday's 3-0 win over Arsenal at the Bird's Nest but hopes he will be able to travel with the team to Singapore.

Pedro had to come off in the first half of the preseason friendly after being sandwiched in-between goalkeeper David Ospina and Ainsley-Maitland Niles when chasing down a high ball into the area.

Conte said the winger was taken to a hospital for checks and could stay there overnight.

"He should be OK, but I think he had a concussion. For this reason our doctor preferred to take him to the hospital and check him in the right way," Conte said. "He should be OK, but it's a pity because it's a bad period to have this type of injury."

Chelsea next travel to Singapore for two more friendlies against Bayern Munich and Inter Milan, and Conte said: "If the situation is OK he will come with us tomorrow to Singapore."

Aside from Pedro's injury, Chelsea had a near-perfect start to their Asian tour as they dominated Arsenal in front of 55,000 fans in Beijing, with Michy Batshuayi netting twice for the Premier League champions.

Batshuayi may be set for another season as a backup at Stamford Bridge after Chelsea signed Real Madrid striker Alvaro Morata this week, but Conte made it clear that he is expecting the Belgium international to play a bigger role than in his first season at the club.

"It was a difficult season for Michy, but don't forget that he scored a very important goal for us to give us the title as West Brom," Conte said. "Last season, he had a bit of difficulty because it's not easy to play in the Premier League. It's a physical league and a very strong league.

"After one year, he's working very well and he's improving. For sure, me and my staff want to improve every single player, and Batshuayi is a young player with great potential.

"It's important for him and for us to continue working this way because, for me, the striker is very important. For me the striker is a point of reference. If the striker stays in the right position where I want him to stay, it's easier for the team and to play good football."
