Diego Costa rejoins Chelsea first-team training after two days on his own

Diego Costa returned to Chelsea first-team training on Tuesday and could be in contention to face Hull City this weekend.

The 28-year-old trained alone at Cobham on Sunday and Monday with coach Antonio Conte giving the rest of the Chelsea players two days off after Saturday's 3-0 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

But sources told ESPN FC that the move was simply the next stage in Costa's recovery from a back injury, and not punishment for a heated training ground argument with a fitness coach and Conte last week that occurred amid the backdrop of significant and lucrative interest from Chinese Super League club Tianjin Quanjian.

There were no individual talks held between Conte and Costa on Tuesday, sources said. Instead, the striker was assessed by Chelsea's medical staff prior to training and deemed to be in good enough shape to rejoin the rest of the squad.

Both sides have adopted a more conciliatory tone since news broke of the row and Conte's decision to leave Costa out of the Leicester trip on Friday, though the episode has cast doubt on his long-term future at Stamford Bridge.

Prior to the Leicester City match on Saturday, sources close to Costa told ESPN Brasil that he is not interested in a move to China this month, while Chelsea have never wavered in their stance that the Premier League's top scorer is not for sale.

Tianjin Quanjian, meanwhile, appear to have called off their pursuit of Costa for the moment, with owner Shu Yuhui saying that his club are now looking to do a January deal for Fiorentina striker Nikola Kalinic after also failing with bids for Karim Benzema and Radamel Falcao.

Costa has been influential for the Premier League leaders this season, scoring 14 goals and assisting five in 19 appearances.

The attacker signed for the Blues from Atletico Madrid in 2014 and has since netted 46 times in 73 league outings.
