Antonio Conte wants to match Jose Mourinho's legacy at Chelsea

LONDON -- Chelsea manager Antonio Conte has said he hopes to get the time to build a legacy to match Jose Mourinho's achievements at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho, who brings his Manchester United side to his old club on Sunday, is regarded as the greatest manager in Chelsea's history, having won three Premier League titles and a total of seven major trophies in two spells in charge.

Conte said he would love the opportunity to find similar success to that achieved by Mourinho, who was sacked last season after the club's Premier League title defence imploded.

"Jose was a very important manager in the history of this club," the Italian told a news conference. "I hope to work at this club for many years, to build something important for the present and for the future.

"It's important to have time to work and to build. When I signed my contract with Chelsea, I signed for three years. In my mind is to stay here for three years and build success for this club."

Conte has made a promising start to life at Stamford Bridge, winning five of his first eight Premier League matches.

But he said he had no interest in discussing his team as potential title contenders this season, saying they had to continue working hard.

"In my mind is always to give the maximum in my work," Conte added. "When you give your maximum it's important, but it's not the most important thing if you win or arrive in second, third, fourth, fifth.

"It's important for me to give the maximum of myself. I want to know in my conscience that I gave it my all every day.

"Only one team can win the title. You must understand always the situation, and then you have to work. If you work, you will see at the end of the season.

"When I come back to my house [at the end of the day], my conscience is clear."
