Chelsea must challenge for Premier League title - Cesar Azpilicueta

Cesar Azpilicueta has claimed Chelsea must challenge for the Premier League title after last season's disastrous 10th place finish.

The Blues suffered a shambolic defence to their 2014-15 title, finishing 31 points behind champions Leicester City.

But the Spain international is adamant that they must challenge immediately under Antonio Conte.

"Our minimum target is to reach the top four," explained the 26-year-old. 'But we have to challenge for trophies and we have to challenge for the title."

Azpilicueta's role under Conte is unclear -- with the former Athletic Bilbao full-back happy to play on either side of a probable back four -- but no matter where he plays he is sure the Blues must repay their fans after last season's turmoil.

"We are coming from a very low position and we are not happy with that," Azpilicueta told Sky Sports News HQ. "We want to come back to our real position, which is fighting for the title.

"Last season was very hard for us and our fans also but they were behind us all season. We were suffering but now is the time to start from the beginning.

"We have to show that we are back and that we can challenge for a title."

The Blues open up the new campaign with a testing fixture at home to West Ham on Monday night football.

Before that though Conte continues pre-season with their first real test against Liverpool later tonight.
