PARIS -- Chelsea captain John Terry decided himself not to travel with the squad for Tuesday's Champions League round-of-16 tie at Paris Saint-Germain, the Premier League club confirmed on Monday.
Terry hobbled off in the first half of Chelsea's 5-1 victory over Newcastle on Sunday after tweaking a hamstring in an aerial tussle with Aleksandar Mitrovic.
The 35-year-old joined the rest of the Chelsea squad for the first 15 minutes of an open training session on Monday, raising Chelsea's hopes he could play, but the Blues have now confirmed that he has remained in London.
Interim coach Guus Hiddink revealed that Terry made the choice to stay in London after concluding he was in no condition to help his team.
"It was not a decision made by me," Hiddink said when asked about Terry opting not to come. "He was having too much trouble to travel. Even to try tomorrow... we made a test this morning and didn't work out well, so the decision was made to leave him at home.
"He was, himself, also convinced he could not be of worth to the team at the moment. He has a bit of a problem on his hamstring and on the tendon in that area. That's why we had the test this morning and we decided he would not participate."
Chelsea face Manchester City in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday and Hiddink said he would have to think carefully before taking a chance on Terry's fitness in France.
"It will be difficult to say whether he can play this weekend," he said. "That's why we'd prefer him to keep undergoing treatment back at Cobham."
The Blues are already short-handed at the back following Kurt Zouma's season-ending injury. Branislav Ivanovic could move over to play alongside previously out-of-favour Gary Cahill, with Baba Rahman coming in as a full-back.
January arrival Matt Miazga and academy product Jake Clarke-Salter both travelled with Chelsea to France, and either could be named as an available substitute for the first time.
"We've practised with other people in at central defence, so it was not a surprise for the players that we had to make some changes," Hiddink said.
"Of course, not having John is a bit of a setback. He's a leader. But I'm not the type of coach to moan and moan. We have to go on. The players who will replace him I have complete faith in them."
Hiddink also confirmed that Oscar has overcome the minor calf injury that kept him out of the Newcastle win to be available at Parc des Princes, but Alexandre Pato is continuing his "preseason" fitness regime at Cobham and will not be involved.
Thibaut Courtois admits the Blues could miss their captain's leadership but insists he has confidence in his teammates to step up.
"I don't know if it changes a lot," Courtois said of Terry's absence. "John is a leader. In the team he's our captain. When he went off on Saturday, Ivanovic and Gary [Cahill] played well as well. We have a lot of quality defensively in our team. We'll miss his leadership capacity, but other players have to step in and take over that leadership."
