Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho: Didier Drogba criticism was to sell books

Jose Mourinho has claimed former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba criticised the club because he is looking to sell copies of his new book.

Drogba, who scored 164 goals in two spells at Stamford Bridge, said the Blues were lacking leaders this season.

Speaking at the launch of his book "Commitment" last week, he said: "There are some facts that you can't hide.

"During my time at Chelsea we had a lot of leaders in the team, not only last year but during the previous seasons.

"We could take responsibility for a result and change the situation in bad moments, such as when there was a change of manager or when we had bad results."

But Mourinho said he was not concerned by the remarks and believed the Montreal Impact striker was seeking publicity.

He told reporters: "When you speak because you want to sell books, I don't read [it].

"I like interviews from big guys like Didier with good journalists or newspapers or television, but this is not an interview. It was to sell books.

"It doesn't disappoint me -- it was just the reality. It was just to sell books. I can analyse Didier's interview with pleasure, but not Didier selling books."

Meanwhile, Mourinho may have conceded defeat in Chelsea's bid to retain the Premier League title -- but he stressed that he wanted his team to "play like champions" for the remainder of the season.

Chelsea have endured a woeful title defence and are 15th in the table ahead of their visit to in-form Tottenham on Sunday.

Successive wins for only the second time this season, against Norwich and Maccabi Tel Aviv, have restored some confidence.

And Mourinho said: "We have to play every match as if we are fighting for the title, but the reality is we need points, the same way we needed them last season, when we were top of the table and almost champions and fighting to be champions.

"In this moment, we are far from even the European positions. We have to play every game with ambition, with determination.

"Every point until the end of the season can make a difference. We have lost so many points already that now we have to fight for every point even more."

Mourinho said Chelsea's players were "focused on doing our job the best we can."

And he added that his aim was to get to the end of December in a position where "we can smell the top part of the league and believe that, in the second part of the season, we will be able to reach the top positions."
