Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been given a one-match stadium suspension with immediate effect and fined £40,000 after admitting a charge of misconduct, the Football Association announced on Monday.
The Chelsea boss was hit with the charge after being sent to the stands during his side's 2-1 defeat at West Ham last month.
Mourinho failed to take his place in the dugout for the second half of Chelsea's defeat at Upton Park, it later emerging he had been sent off after seeking to exchange words with referee Jonathan Moss at half-time.
The penalty means Mourinho will not be present for Saturday's game at Stoke which Chelsea may need to win for the Portuguese boss to keep his job.
An Independent Regulatory Commission confirmed Mourinho's punishment which will take immediate effect.
An FA statement read: "The Chelsea manager admitted an FA charge of misconduct regarding his language and/or behaviour towards the match officials in or around the dressing room area during half-time of the game against West Ham United on 24 October 2015."
Chelsea's dismal form has seen them suffer six defeats in 11 league games this season, and club sources have told ESPN FC that Mourinho has two games to save his job, with Carlo Ancelotti interested in taking over even on a temporary basis.
If the Blues struggle against Dynamo Kiev in the Champions League at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday and face a group stage exit, the trip to Stoke next Saturday could be decisive for Mourinho.
The FA also confirmed it has withdrawn a misconduct charge against Chelsea assistant Silvino Louro arising from the same game, having "considered further representation."
The news caps a miserable day for Mourinho, who earlier learned he has been made the subject of an individual legal claim by former Chelsea club doctor Eva Carneiro arising from an incident on the opening day of the season.
And it marks the second time this season he has faced sanction by the FA, having been fined £50,000 and given a suspended ban following comments after his side's fourth league defeat of the season to Southampton.
Saturday's defeat to Liverpool left them languishing 15th in the table, just four points clear of the relegation zone.
The odds on Mourinho being the next top-flight manager to leave his job have shortened since the defeat to Liverpool, with some bookmakers making him as short as 1-3 to go.
