Chelsea sign goalkeeper Marco Amelia to cover for injured Thibaut Courtois

Chelsea announced the signing of former AC Milan goalkeeper Marco Amelia on a free transfer on Thursday.

Amelia, who signed a deal until the end of the season, came to Chelsea on trial at the end of last month following Thibaut Courtois' knee injury.

Asmir Begovic had been the only senior goalkeeper available to Jose Mourinho with sources saying Courtois will miss 10 to 12 weeks after knee surgery.

The 33-year-old last played for Serie B side Perugia, after spending four years with Milan.

The Italy international has also played for Roma, Livorno, Palermo and Genoa.

He was a part of Italy's 2006 World Cup-winning squad but last year had to drop five divisions to kickstart his career at amateur side Rocca Priora.

Chelsea are able to sign free agents because they named only 19 players over 21 in their 25-man Premier League squad.
