New Chelsea signing Papy Djilobodji has vowed to prove his worth in England.

Djilobodji, 26, was a surprise signing for the English Premier League champions, joining them for £2.7 million shortly before the transfer window closed.

The former Nantes defender has been left out of Chelsea's squad for the Champions League but he says he is willing to work hard to prove himself in London.

"It's one part of my dream that's coming true," he told Nantes' official website. "The path was very long but I haven't got here for nothing.

"I have to continue to work, to respect everyone and to show what I can do... it's up to me to work well and show people that I merit my place."

Following Djilobodji's departure, Nantes president Waldemar Kita was highly critical of the player's agent and said he was disappointed at the lack of gratitude shown.

But the Senegal international put the latter problem right on the Nantes website, thanking both Kita and his son Franck, who is also a director at the club.

"President Kita was like my father and Franck like my brother," Djilobodji said. "I would like to thank them for what they did for me. They helped me a lot with my transfer. We'll stay in touch."
