Chelsea closing on new deal with Andreas Christensen

Chelsea are set to hand highly-rated defender Andreas Christensen a new contract before sending him out on loan next season, sources have told ESPN FC.

The Danish defender is highly-rated at Chelsea and made his first-team debut last season.

The central defender, who can also play at right-back, made his Chelsea bow in a League Cup win at Shrewsbury and he made two further appearances in the FA Cup and Premier League.

The 19-year-old is entering the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge and the club have been locked in talks as they try to tie down Christensen to a new long-term deal.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho sees Christensen as someone who can become a mainstay in the side in the future and wants him to sign a new deal before going out on loan to gain some valuable first-team experience next term.

Borussia Monchengladbach are leading the chase to sign Christensen and he is expected to make the move to Germany once his contract situation is resolved at Chelsea.

Christensen was a member of the Denmark Under-21 side that reached the semifinals of this summer's European Championship finals.
