Sunderland survive Exeter scare, Newcastle cruise past Northampton

Sunderland survived a scare at home to League Two side Exeter as they made it to the third round of the Capital One Cup with a 6-3 win.

Jack Rodwell fired home the opener before Jermain Defoe added a second after flicking the ball into the air and going around the keeper.

Exeter hit back through Emmanuel Oyeleke though before David Wheeler rose high to head home an equaliser with 31 minutes gone.

Defoe restored Sunderland's lead after he did well to control and finish, but Tom McCready drilled home a third for the visitors two minutes before the break.
