Jose Mourinho wants regular Wembley appearances for Chelsea

Jose Mourinho says he wants it to become "normal" for Chelsea to regularly visit Wembley again, but does not think winning Sunday's League Cup final against Tottenham is essential to deriving the momentum to winning the league.

This new young Chelsea team have a chance at their first trophy as a group this weekend, with much being made of how Friday marked 10 years to the day since Mourinho lifted his first piece of silverware at Stamford Bridge, and how that League Cup propelled a period in which they won five trophies in three years.

And, speaking at his prematch news conference, Mourinho said it was more important for his team to get used to regularly competing there.

"Chelsea cannot win everything, cannot win every season," he said. "If we want to do that we have to change countries, to a country where competition is not so hard, and the title is an obligation year after year.

"Chelsea in the last 10 years only won the League Cup twice but many times the team was at Wembley, they won leagues, they won European competitions.

"At the moment, Chelsea is doing very well, with a new team that was not at dozens of finals. We need to try, with this new generation of players, with this new team, to make Wembley normal for us, in the sense of trying to go there year after year."

At the same time, Mourinho denied the idea the match could affect the title race.

He continued: "I think it's the only moment since I arrived last July 2013 that I don't think about future of this club. It's the only moment I think about the moment. I don't think about the future, the consequences, just this game.

"We have a final to win on Sunday and nothing else matters."

Mourinho also denied he would be happy with the struggles of his rivals in Europe, because it could have a knock-on effect for Chelsea, with seedings and coefficients.

This week saw Manchester City and Arsenal lose the first legs of their Champions League ties at home, to Barcelona and Arsenal respectively, and Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur were eliminated.

He said: "We need English teams to win in Europe, we need English teams to win matches, to score points, and I'm never happy when English teams lose in Europe because I work in this country and may be affected by that.

"I don't want to analyse performances and results, I analyse just by the global view, that we need points, we want to keep year after year same number of leagues in Europa League.

"I don't want to lose positions in ranking, don't want to lose position to other countries. And when you don't perform as a country, globally year after year, and rely on reaching later stages of competitions, it's not good."
