Cameroon in discussion with Eriksson over vacant managerial position

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has emerged as the favourite to take over as Cameroon coach, after the country's football federation confirmed that talks with the Swede took place last week.

The Cameroon coaching job became vacant in February when Hugo Broos' contract came to an end, and Alexandre Belinga took over on an interim basis while the Cameroon Football Federation (Fecafoot) narrowed down prospective candidates.

Earlier this week, Dutch duo Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert were linked with the position, but Fecafoot confirmed on Monday that Eriksson was in discussions to take over the role.

"After spending 72 hours, Sven-Goran Eriksson left Yaoundé on Saturday 28 July 2018," Fecafoot announced on Twitter.

"The Swedish manager was invited to Cameroon for a discussion in connection with the recruitment of a head coach for the senior national side - the Indomitable Lions.

"After the interview with Sven-Goran Eriksson and taking into account the other existing offers, Fecafoot will reveal in the next few days its choice of permanent coach for our national team."

The 70-year-old Eriksson is no stranger to African football, having taken Ivory Coast to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, although he is perhaps best remembered for his time in charge of the England national team, between 2001 and 2006.

Most recently he has coached in China, where he took over as Guangzhou Evergrande in 2013, before spells in charge of Shanghai SIPG and Shenzhen. He has been unattached since June 2017.

In April this year, Fecafoot confirmed that they received 77 applications for the vacant managerial position -- including the likes of Raymond Domenech, Lothar Matthaus, John Toshack, Carlos Queiroz and Philippe Troussier -- but Eriksson's name was not on that list.

The BBC reports that Eriksson could earn as much as CFA 50 million (€71,000) monthly, and will live in the country while working with a Cameroonian assistant.
