Steven Defour praises 'fantastic' Burnley fans after dream debut

Steven Defour has lauded Burnley's fans for their support after his new club beat Liverpool on his debut.

Defour, 28, joined Burnley from Anderlecht last week and the club's record signing made an immediate impact by setting up a goal as the Clarets beat Liverpool 2-0 on Saturday.

The former Porto and Standard Liege midfielder experienced some problems with fans in Belgium but he was impressed by the backing Burnley received at Turf Moor.

"It was obviously nice to start that way," Defour was quoted as saying by La Derniere Heure. "I could hardly have dreamed of better. The supporters were super and the atmosphere was fantastic.

"It's very different to Belgium. Here the fans support their team until the end."

New Belgium manager Roberto Martinez watched Saturday's game from the stands ahead of naming his first squad this week.

Defour, who turned down a lucrative offer from the Middle East to join Burnley, was happy to see the ex-Everton boss.

"It's a good thing that he came," Defour said. "I had the chance to speak with him after the match.

"He didn't give anything away concerning his selection. It was more to do with a first contact."

Defour has 46 caps for Belgium but failed to make their Euro 2016 squad after last featuring for his national side in November 2015.

He hopes his form at Burnley will help him to eventually earn a recall.

"It's clear that I would like to play for the national team again," he said. "It's always an honour to wear the colours of your country and I'm ready if he needs me."
