Brisbane Roar's VAR objections 'all about consistency' - John Aloisi

Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi has accepted Sunday's video assistant referee's (VAR) decision but said more consistency is needed, after an offside goal in the A-League's opening round was allowed to stand.

Aloisi was left incensed after a Massimo Maccarone goal was disallowed in the Roar's 2-1 defeat to the Newcastle Jets on the weekend.

After speaking with referees boss Ben Wilson on Tuesday, Aloisi acknowledged the correct decision was reached -- albeit not quickly enough for his liking -- with replays showing the veteran Italian striker was clearly offside in build-up play.

But he said Wilson told him the VAR was wrong to have allowed Roy O'Donovan's second goal in Newcastle's 5-1 win over the Central Coast Mariners earlier this month.

O'Donovan was offside when he attempted to head a cross from Dimitri Petratos, but neither the assistant referee nor the VAR spotted it, and he scored seconds later.

"The VAR, it's good when they get it right but they've also got it wrong," Aloisi said on Wednesday.

"I spoke to Ben Wilson, he said they clearly got that one wrong in round one, but got ours right.

"That's where the confusion is.

"I don't understand when they come out and say it was clear, everyone knew.

"No, not everyone knew.

"Not even the general public knew, the media obviously didn't know because they didn't pick up on O'Donovan's one in the first round.

"That was exactly the same as Maccarone's.

"They admitted [it] to me in private, so I'm saying it in public so everyone understands that I wasn't complaining for no reason.

"I was complaining because we weren't clear."

John Aloisi
John Aloisi has called for more clarification around the A-League's video assistant referee's rulings.

Aloisi said he was happy with the VAR but not satisfied with how long it took to make a decision.

"I don't mind if they get the correct decisions and they're consistent on it. It's all about consistency," he said.

"How far do you go back? That's the questionable bit.

"Do you go back four passes, five passes, one pass?

"The disappointing thing about that was it took so long. It breaks up the game, especially when we're chasing a team.

"We were celebrating for three minutes before they told us there was no goal.

"I think the supporters would have been disappointed in that because they were up and about, seeing Maccarone score a great goal and then three minutes later being told it's not a goal."
