Mauro Icardi to return to Inter Milan training after standoff

Mauro Icardi's standoff with Inter Milan appears set to end amid reports that he will return to training with the club on Thursday.

The Argentine forward has not been on the field in more than a month, since being stripped off his captaincy amid protracted contract negotiations. The 26-year-old Icardi has said he has a knee injury, although the club has said that tests did not reveal any particular problem.

A meeting between Inter chief executive Giuseppe Marotta and Paolo Nicoletti, Icardi's lawyer,...

Peru forward Paolo Guerrero was ordered to serve out a 14-month ban by a Swiss court.

LAUSANNE, Switzerland -- Peru forward Paolo Guerrero has lost his final appeal against a 14-month ban by FIFA for a positive doping test.

Switzerland's supreme court said its judges rejected Guerrero's appeal against FIFA and the World Anti-Doping Agency.

The Swiss Federal Tribunal ruling announced on Thursday delays the 35-year-old player's return to action with Brazilian club Internacional until early April.

Guerrero tested positive for a metabolite of cocaine at a World Cup qualifying game against...

Flamengo must do better to help families, fans heal following tragic fire

ESPN Brazil reporter Debora Gares joins Get Up to provide the latest from Flamengo's training center where a fire killed 10 teens.
A fire on Friday left 10 people dead and three people injured at Flamengo's training centre in Rio de Janeiro.

Last Sunday, Rodolfo Landim, the president of Flamengo, held a media conference to explain the position and conduct of his club in the wake of the fire at their training ground that killed 10 youth players. It was an emergency move, a bid to improve the club's communication after what was widely seen as two extremely poor weeks of post-tragedy administration.

This emphatically is not the scenario Landim envisioned when he took over as president on Dec. 19, 2018.

There were grounds to believe that...

Tragedy in the Vulture's Nest: The preventable death of 10 rising stars at Flamengo

Vinicius Vital cries during the funeral of his friend Arthur Vinicius, one of 10 young soccer players who lost their lives after the fire at Flamengo.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil -- Fifteen-year-old Christian Esmerio's funeral on a 95 degree Sunday packed the humble chapel at Rio's Iraja cemetery well beyond capacity, with photographers and television crews jostling for space along cracked sidewalks.

Burials in front of the media are rare here. Most people laid to rest are fameless residents of the working-class suburbs, where Esmerio was born to a 20-year-old recent high school graduate and a 23-year-old street vendor. But Esmerio, a goalkeeper,...

Chaos as police fire grenades before Vasco da Gama vs. Fluminense

Brazilian football had another day of unprecedented chaos on Sunday when fans were allowed into the Maracana Stadium midway through the first half after a judge lifted a ban imposed when rival sides could not agree in which end their fans would sit.

The gates were opened around 30 minutes into a Rio state championship final to allow thousands of Vasco da Gama supporters, and a few from rivals Fluminense, into the ground.

Police had earlier fired pepper spray and percussion grenades in and around...
