Brazil's Luiz Gustavo to miss Copa America due to knee surgery

Wolfsburg midfielder Luiz Gustavo has been ruled out of Brazil's Copa America squad as he is set for knee surgery next week after sustaining a meniscus injury.

Gustavo, 27, featured for Wolfsburg in their 3-1 win against Borussia Dortmund in the DFB-Pokal final on Saturday and got on the scoresheet for his club.

However, the former Bayern Munich midfielder, who has won 32 caps for Brazil, is now set to miss the Copa America -- which takes place in Chile from June 11 to July 4 -- having struggled with a knee injury in recent weeks.

Wolfsburg announced on Tuesday that, as well as skipping the tournament, Gustavo is to have knee surgery on June 8.

"The damage was greater than expected," Wolfsburg coach Dieter Hecking told kicker. "It's clear that the tournament makes no sense for him.

"We hope he will be back in time for the preparations for the new season."
