United States' Fabian Johnson ruled out with Achilles tendon injury

United States international defender Fabian Johnson is expected to miss the remainder of 2016 with an Achilles tendon problem, Borussia Monchengladbach announced on Sunday.

Johnson, 29, has so far made 20 appearances across all competitions for Gladbach this term, scoring two goals and assisting two more, and also appeared five times for the U.S. national side in that time.

Gladbach boss Andre Schubert already has to do without attacking players Ibrahima Traore and Patrick Herrmann for the Bundesliga games against Augsburg and Wolfsburg before the winter break.

The former is sidelined with a groin injury while the latter sustained a ligament injury his ankle.

Gladbach are 12th in the Bundesliga and will participate in the Europa League after being eliminated from a Champions League group that included Barcelona, Manchester City and Celtic.
