DORTMUND, Germany -- Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc says the club is in no rush to make a decision on their coaching position.
Dortmund handed coach Peter Stoger a six-month deal after he took over from Peter Bosz in December. However, Zorc said a decision on an extension will be made towards the end of the season.
"We will decide about the future once we've qualified for the Champions League," Zorc told Eurosport on Sunday ahead of a 1-0 win against Hannover, adding: "That concerns the coaching position but we also know that changes must be made to the squad. Currently, [the squad] isn't what we had imagined."
After Thursday's lacklustre scoreless draw in Salzburg, which saw the Black and Yellows crash out of the Europa League, Zorc was satisfied with the team's response on Sunday.
"Today's win was deserved considering the many scoring opportunities we had," Zorc told reporters after the victory. "Also, considering that we had to play an away match two and a half days ago and at the heels of a negative result I'm satisfied with today's performance."
Chelsea loanee Michy Batshuayi, who hit the post within the first minute, scored the winner after 24 minutes, connecting to Andre Schurrle's corner kick with his heel to tip the ball into the far corner.
"We saw a lot of good elements in our game today," Zorc added. "Finally, we created numerous scoring chances. We hit the post twice. Obviously, it would have been better if he had added a second earlier to ensure a bit more calmness but after a European game, the three points is what matters most. Now we have a few days to catch a breather."
Although the hosts created many scoring chances in the game, they had weaker periods in the second half. Hannover managed to complete 22 passes in Dortmund's half in the first period, but that number more than doubled in the second.
Zorc was hopeful that BVB's performances will be more consistent without the strain of midweek fixtures.
He said: "It's our ambition to perform well on a consistent level for the entire 90 minutes in a game. That's the plan [for the future]. A lot of players will stay in Dortmund during the international break, giving the coach the chance to work on certain subjects.
"Our problem was -- and still is -- that some players have problems to play 90 minutes every three days because they weren't used [to the strain] over a longer period. That issue has now ceased to exist [after the Europa League exit]. Our players will be fitter going forward."
Asked about Mario Gotze, who had been subbed off at half-time on Thursday and criticised by Stoger for a bad performance afterwards, Zorc replied: "He played well today. Made a lot of good runs into the channels.
"Being subbed off and being criticised is one of the most normal things in football. There is absolutely no need to hype that according to the status of a player."
The sporting director also found praise for BVB's holding midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud, who has shown a much-improved form in the second half of the season after initially struggling after joining the Ruhr Side from Gladbach in the summer.
"He is becoming more and more our conductor in central midfield," Zorc said. "He is someone that never hides, who demands the ball also in difficult situations. He's gaining more and more security.
"I was very impressed today by his was his industrious shift. He's one of the players that cover the most ground. The future belongs to Mo here at Borussia Dortmund, I'm convinced of that."
Dortmund have kept pace with Ruhr rivals Schalke on Sunday, staying one point behind the Royal Blues in the table. BVB travel to Bayern Munich following the international break.
