Julian Weigl extends contract with Borussia Dortmund until 2021

Julian Weigl has extended his contract with Borussia Dortmund by two years until 2021, the Bundesliga club announced on Tuesday.

Weigl, 21, joined Dortmund from 1860 Munich in the summer of 2015, and quickly established himself as a fixture in Thomas Tuchel's lineup, starting in 25 league games.

He scored his lone goal for the club this October in the Champions League against Sporting Lisbon.

"I feel very well cared for at Dortmund, both in a sporting sense and the whole environment," Weigl said. "It was a logical decision for me and I did not have to think for long about extending my contract."

The Germany international had recently been linked with clubs including Real Madrid and Manchester City.

Earlier this month, Weigl told reporters that he "happy in Dortmund" amid links with Madrid, with Tuchel saying the midfielder is "not ready to play for" the Spanish giants.

Dortmund's sporting director Michael Zorc added: "Julian is already a personality despite his young years. He has managed to achieve a very high level at BVB and is still only at the beginning of his sporting development.

"We are very happy that he has decided to stay with us for the long term."
