Borussia Dortmund relishing Champions League clash vs. Benfica

Borussia Dortmund are looking forward to their Champions League round-of-16 meeting with Benfica, with CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke saying the draw brings back memories of their 5-0 win over the Portuguese side in 1963.

Dortmund will battle the Portuguese giants for a place in the quarterfinals, with the first leg taking place in Lisbon in mid-February and the return leg at the Westfalenstadion three weeks later.

Last season, Dortmund beat Porto in the Europa League round of 32, and during the Champions League group stage this year they twice came out on top against Benfica's city rivals Sporting.

"This draw brings back memories," Watzke said on Sky, referencing one of the club's greatest wins.

"We had the legendary 5-0 win against them at home back in the 1960s. Benfica are the strongest side in Portugal right now. But we have a good chance to reach the next round. It's a super match for our fans."

Thomas Tuchel told the club's official website: "We got drawn against the next big Portuguese team after meeting Porto and Sporting in recent seasons.

"We are looking forward to exciting and emotional matches with the Portuguese record champion and current league leader."

Club captain Marcel Schmelzer said: "This draw completes our set of big Portuguese sides. It brings back memories of our late club legend Aki Schmidt and Borussia's triumph against Benfica in the match of the century in 1963. Their current side tops the standings in Portugal. It will be a difficult task."

Dortmund have reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League twice in the last five seasons, and were eliminated by Juventus during their last campaign in 2014-15.

Sporting director Michael Zorc is aware that despite topping Group F they will have to fight for their passage to the last eight.

"They are a top club, and with all their force they can spark a dynamic," he said. "They are an attractive draw."
