Borussia Dortmund announce record €376m turnover for 2015-2016 season

Borussia Dortmund have announced a record turnover of €376 million for the 2015-16 season and an after-tax profit of €29.4m, up from €5.5m the previous fiscal year.

Dortmund did not play in Champions League last term and were eliminated in the Europa League by Liverpool at the quarterfinal stage, but the Bundesliga club were able to increase their turnover by exactly €100m from €276m in 2014-15.

"It's a record turnover, but that was to expected after the two transfers of Ilkay Gundogan and Mats Hummels," CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke told a news conference on Friday. "The positive side is that despite [playing in the] Europa League and without the transfers, we've increased our turnover by seven percent."

In addition to the sales of Gundogan and Hummels, Dortmund sold Kevin Kampl to Bayer Leverkusen, Ciro Immobile to Sevilla and Jonas Hofmann to Borussia Monchengladbach.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan's transfer to Manchester United was only completed in the new fiscal year, which began on July 1.

"There'll be another turnover increase for all Bundesliga clubs because of the new TV deal," Watzke said, referring to the new four-year domestic deal worth €4.64 billion, and added that deal for international rights to the German top flight remains undervalued.

On further areas for financial improvement, he said he expected the forthcoming changes to the Champions League -- set to include a guarantee of four group-stage spots for top leagues -- will mean there is no need for clubs to push through a European Super League.

"There will be no European Super League, I believe, but the goal has to be a reformed Champions League," Watzke said.

He added that Dortmund will go to China and "most likely" Japan for another preseason trip next summer before "directing attention to the Northern and Latin American market."
