Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels poised to decide on future

Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels has told Bild Am Sonntag he "has to make a big call" about his future, with his contract set to expire next year.

Dortmund captain Hummels joined from Bayern Munich's reserve team in 2008 and has made 221 league appearances as well as winning almost 50 caps for Germany.

The 27-year-old World Cup winner said his decision -- which he wants to make before the summer's European Championship -- would depend on what teammates Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Ilkay Gundogan, also under contract until 2017, opted to do next.

"I don't necessarily want to, but I have to make a big call," the defender said.

"If I sign a long-term deal now, I will be 31 or 32 when it expires. And right now I don't plan on playing until I am 38."

He said he would take into consideration the thoughts of his family and friends along with the decisions of Mkhitaryan and Gundogan.

"I want to play a certain kind of football, but I also want to win titles. I've got the arguments in my head, but I need to connect them," he said.

He said the decision made by Mkhitaryan and Gundogan "certainly plays a role" and added: "We talk to each other about what our plans are. It has to be like that so that you know where you are.

"The better the team, the more tempting it is to be a part of it."

Germany international Gundogan has reportedly already agreed a deal in principle with Manchester City, despite his representatives playing down the link.
