Borussia Dortmund's Mats Hummels responds to media criticism

Mats Hummels has hit back at those criticising his recent form for Borussia Dortmund following the club's second Bundesliga loss of the season.

Dortmund suffered a 3-1 defeat to Hamburg at the weekend to leave them eight points off league leaders Bayern Munich.

Hummels, who scored an own goal in the game, has come under scrutiny from sections of the media for his displays, with Bild asking "What's wrong with him?"

The Germany international, who has had less contact with the media since October when he questioned his teammates, responded on Twitter: "All that totally overblown criticism.

"Unbelievable what you have to put up with. Blown out of proportion with reality."

Asked whether Hummels is suffering from being overplayed, Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel said: "With his quality it is his and our aspiration that he plays a lot, and can cope with the work load."

Tuchel was left disappointed with his team's performance against Hamburg, adding: "We can defend better and we have to defend better. We had no defence."
