Willy Sagnol can't explain Bordeaux's awful form this season

Bordeaux boss Willy Sagnol has admitted that he is at a loss to explain his team's awful form in October.

With Liverpool drawing against Rubin Kazan at Anfield on Thursday, Bordeaux missed out on the chance to go top of Group B in the Europa League as they slumped to a 1-0 home loss against Sion.

Bordeaux's defeat against the Swiss side came just days after another below-par performance in front of their own fans, when they were held to a 0-0 draw by struggling Montpellier in Ligue 1.

The 2009 French champions have now won only one of their last nine matches and they have failed to score in three of their four games in October.

Sagnol, 38, said he felt like he was experiencing the same thing every week.

"We forget the basics very often," Sagnol told a news conference.

"At the start of the season, we put that down to the inexperience and lack of maturity of some players.

"The more time passes, I think those aren't the real reasons.

"At a certain point, you have to know how to look at yourself in the mirror and to be aware of your real current level."

The former Bayern Munich player said that in attack his team's intentions were good but that their lack of success was devastating.

"It's not worthy of European competition or the desire to challenge for one of the top positions in Ligue 1," he said.

Having described the situation as "intolerable" at the weekend, Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud once again criticised the team's performance.

"It's tiring to relive the same thing in every match," L'Equipe quoted him as saying.

Thursday's defeat leaves Bordeaux bottom of Group B, five points behind leaders Sion but only one behind second-placed Liverpool.

Sagnol's side are 14th in Ligue 1 after 10 matches, six points above the relegation zone.
