Police cancel planned Boca Juniors 'fan day' amid security concerns

Copa Libertadores runners-up Boca Juniors were forced to cancel a planned "fan day" on Wednesday after the Buenos Aires security ministry determined it was unsafe for them to gather in the club's stadium, La Bombonera.

The club had already sold tickets and the event was planned as a way to thank fans for their support. After a 2-2 draw in the Copa Libertadores first leg at La Bombonera, crosstown rival River Plate prevailed 3-1 after extra time on Sunday, winning on 5-3 on aggregate.

Sunday's second leg, originally scheduled for Nov. 24 at River's Monumental Stadium, was moved out of Argentina by CONMEBOL and played in Madrid after fan violence, including an attack of Boca's team bus, forced postponement of that second match.

The violence continued on Monday after the match when two police officers were injured and at least 20 people arrested in Buenos Aires in the early hours of Monday as River Plate fans celebrated the victory.

"Boca Juniors would like to inform all that, given the restrictions imposed upon us by the Ministry of Security of the City of Buenos Aires for the use of the stadium, the doors of the stadium cannot be opened this Wednesday 12/12," the club said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The restrictions imposed upon us will not allow us to allow the general public into the stadium and as a result the planned activity will not have the same objective, despite the fact that the media would still be allowed to enter. For this reason the club cannot make the stadium available to the fans at this time and we ask all our fans who planned to attend to please be understanding at this time."
