Inter Milan eyeing Bayern Munich's Arturo Vidal as summer's big signing

Arturo Vidal
Arturo Vidal joined Bayern Munich two years ago after four seasons with Juventus.

After being turned aside by two of their top targets, Inter Milan are hoping Arturo Vidal may be eager to return to Italy.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Inter Milan are hoping to add the 30-year-old midfielder after their attempts to move for AS Roma's Radja Nainggolan and RB Leipzig's Naby Keita were turned away.

Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti said last week in Singapore that Vidal would "stay with us 100 percent," but it seems the Chile international is still hoping for a move -- even though the newspaper quoted Vidal as saying he "doesn't know anything" about it because he has been on holiday.

Inter would be willing to offer Bayern up to €50 million for Vidal -- more than the €37m Bayern paid Juventus to acquire him in 2015 -- and then would offer him wages of €7.5m a season.

Just as recently as last month, Vidal was trying to encourage Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez to join him at Bayern. Now, it seems possible that neither player is with the club this season.

ESPN FC Italy correspondent Ben Gladwell's take: Inter are bound to make one big signing this summer and appear to have been putting all their eggs into one basket, which could now be Vidal. It was Angel Di Maria before, but with Ivan Perisic and Stevan Jovetic now likely to stay, they do not need that kind of player as much.

Vidal is a much more up-market Gary Medel and a figure like Nainggolan and Kevin Strootman rolled into one. They were so valuable to Luciano Spalletti at Roma and for his style of play. Vidal knows Italian football well and was one of Juve's best and most influential players in his final season for them.

The only stumbling block I see to this is Bayern's insistence on keeping Vidal. Ancelotti rates him highly and they are not likely to let one of their key players leave, but if Inter can tempt them with a bid of €60 million, they could consider it. They signed Sebastian Rudy from Hoffenheim, who could play the Vidal role, as could Corentin Tolisso to a certain extent.

I think Vidal likes the lifestyle he had in Italy more than in Munich and so he would like this move, but Bayern are the main barrier that Inter need to break down. I doubt Vidal would have any qualms about it being Inter, Juve's bitterest of rivals, either.
