Gibraltar get their first-ever competitive victory after hearing wrong anthem

Heading into Saturday's game vs. Armenia, Gibraltar's national football team had the worst possible record in competitive fixtures, losing 22 straight times in a run dating back to their first official game in 2013. But their trip to Yerevan brought some history, some national pride and some pain.

Let's recap: before the match, the stadium in Armenia played the Liechtenstein national anthem instead of Gibraltar's, prompting Gibraltar's official Twitter account to voice its displeasure at the perceived slight. But on the back of that chaos, the visitors went on to beat their hosts 1-0 and record their first-ever competitive victory.

Joseph Chipolina will be the most popular man on the island after his 50th-minute penalty, a goal that clinched the historic win.

As if that wasn't enough, it was also their first away win in any fixture. Talk about a successful weekend!

The giddy islanders, with a population of roughly 30,000, will host Liechtenstein on Tuesday in another UEFA Nations League D, Group 4 fixture. (Gibraltar have four points after three matches in their group.)

Here's hoping they get the songs correct.
