Liverpool tribute found carved into hillside by Ordnance Survey

Some fans do strange things in the name of their football club, but a mysterious tribute to Liverpool has left some of the UK's leading geographic experts scratching their heads.

While conducting a routine aerial photography flight over Shropshire, Andrew Tyrrell, a remote sensing surveyor working for Ordnance Survey, noticed that somebody had carved the initials "LFC" into the hillside near Titterstone Clee Hill.

According to the Ordnance Survey, the letters are roughly 100 metres -- roughly the same length as the pitch at Anfield -- and appear to have been made by a vehicle of some description.

"I think we can safely rule out aliens on this occasion," said Danny Hyam, a member of the Technical Services team at OS. who helped analyse the image.

"Perhaps there is someone living in this area who supports Everton and has a back garden or bedroom window with a view of the hill and has a Liverpool supporting friend with an extreme sense of humour?

"It is one of the most unusual ways of showing support for a team I've ever seen."

Chris covers the funny side of the game for ESPN FC in the Toe Poke blog.
