Carragher loves it as Barca legend Puyol hacks down United hero Neville

Thursday night saw the inaugural Star Sixes legends tournament kick off in London, with a whole host of veteran football royalty descending on the O2 Arena to take part.

The opening game saw hosts England take on Spain, while star-studded teams from Scotland, Mexico, Brazil, Italy, Nigeria, China, Denmark, Portugal, Germany and France were also in action.

Michael Owen scored the nascent tournament's first ever goal, though his England side eventually wound up on the wrong end of a 4-1 drubbing from Spain.

Carles Puyol also proved that his famously rugged approach hasn't dimmed in the years since his retirement, tagging Phil Neville with a painful tackle -- much to the amusement of Jamie Carragher

In fairness, the ex-Barcelona captain did have the grace to apologise to Neville for the challenge after the game.

You don't mess with Carles.

Elsewhere, Brazil's formidably strong side, which includes Rivaldo Roberto Carlos and Gilberto Silva, beat Italy 2-1 while Michael Ballack's Germany team came out on top in a seven-goal thriller against France.

The second round of group ties are due to take place at the O2 tonight on Friday.

Chris covers the funny side of the game for ESPN FC in the Toe Poke blog.
