Devastated France fan invited to Portugal after Euro 2016 agony
You may recall, in the aftermath of the Euro 2016 final, those heart-warming scenes in which a young Portugal fan did his utmost to comfort a truly distraught France supporter in the Parisian fan zone.
The 10-year-old made his way over to the weeping Frenchman and proceeded to console his emotional counterpart with a hug and a few words of condolence.
Now, having already made contact with youngster Mathis, the official tourist board of Portugal is hoping to also track down the as-yet-unidentified France fan and invite him on an all-expenses paid trip to their country.
"Tourism Portugal has launched an appeal to find the France supporter and invite him to visit Portugal," the board said in a statement.
It also added that in comforting his supposed rival, Mathis had "communicated the intense emotions of the final and demonstrated the way to be friendly, tolerant and authentically Portuguese."
Lovely gesture, but it may be a case of too much, too soon for the devastated French supporter. The poor soul has perhaps only just managed to shut off the waterworks.
