Raul always relished a challenge, and the New York Cosmos are just that

According to ESPN FC reports, Real Madrid and Spain legend Raul has signed a multi-year deal with the New York Cosmos of the NASL.

He was just 17 and he was asleep on the top deck of the bus. The bus was heading up the A2 motorway towards Zaragoza, where Raul Gonzalez Blanco was about to make his debut. If the kid was nervous, a teenager about to play for the biggest club in the world, he didn't show it. "I couldn't have done that," admitted then-Madrid manager Jorge Valdano, but he already knew this kid was different. Valdano had told him that he was thinking of including him and wanted to know what he thought. "If you want...

Despite Chivas USA's misstep, Garber still bullish on MLS in L.A.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber, center left, still defends Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara, center right, for wanting a second team in Los Angeles.
MLS Commissioner Don Garber, center left, still defends Chivas USA owner Jorge Vergara, center right, for wanting a second team in Los Angeles.

It doesn't take much to jog the memory of MLS commissioner Don Garber and take him back to 2004, when MLS was embarking on its first expansion in seven years.

Dave Checketts was set to bring a team to Salt Lake City, but what really caught Garber's eye was the proposal of Chivas Guadalajara owner Jorge Vergara, along with brothers Antonio and Lorenzo Cue, to bring a second team to Los Angeles.

"We were so excited about it," Garber said by telephone. "Vergara and Antonio Cue had this unique and...

Chris Wondolowski still moving on from World Cup miss vs. Belgium

Chris Wondolowski (United States) Shot Off Target at 90+3'

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Lindsey Wondolowski calls it the "24-hour rule." It allows her husband, Chris, a striker for both the U.S. national team and the San Jose Earthquakes, a one-day window to process any negativity that arises from a loss or poor individual performance. Then it's time to look forward.

Earlier this summer that rule was put to the ultimate test. Wondolowski had a glorious chance to grab a game winner in the U.S. team's round-of-16 World Cup match against Belgium. He failed to convert,...

Jurgen Klinsmann talks World Cup, MLS, dual nationals and Donovan

ESPN FC's Doug McIntyre weighs in on Jozy Altidore's new leadership role, Julian Green's opportunity at Hamburg, Geoff Cameron's injury concerns and the upcoming Klinsmann and Donovan final chapter.

PRAGUE -- It may seem like the manager of a national team has lots of free time on his hands. The gap between international games is often measured in weeks and occasionally months. But U.S. manager Jurgen Klinsmann is not one to waste a single second. The next four years will be packed with international tournaments, two Gold Cups, an Olympic Games, a Copa America, possibly a Confederations Cup and, of course, World Cup qualifying.

As such, Klinsmann always has his eye out for talent, and Wednesday's...

MLS's new kids on the block

New England Revolution's newest signing Jermaine Jones joins the ESPN show to discuss his move to the MLS and the blind draw process that brought him to the Revs.

Among the handful of obvious developments that have thus far marked the second half of the MLS season, one of the most thrilling is the rise of a small group of young players who have finally been given a chance to shine. MLS coaches find themselves reaching further and further down the bench through the long summer, a situation that can sometimes create opportunities for new talent that did not feature during the opening part of the league campaign, and give players a chance to step into the...

Week 23 rankings: SKC dominate

Relive all the best action from around the league, including Dom Dwyer's brace and Dillon Serna's long-range volley, in this week's edition of MLS Final Kick.

Week 23 in Major League Soccer saw Sporting Kansas City's emphatic 4-1 win over Toronto FC -- with Dominic Dwyer netting twice from the spot -- solidify its hold on the Eastern Conference, and regain the top spot in ESPN's Power Rankings.

1. Sporting Kansas City (+1)

The defending champs were back to their physical, high-pressing ways against Toronto, and solidified their spot at the top of the Eastern Conference standings with a 4-1 win. That said, Jon Kempin's second-half save with the game in...
