Man United have UCL history on their side vs. Sevilla after goalless first leg

The FC crew are tempering expectations following Manchester United's uninspiring performance against Sevilla.

A goalless draw against Sevilla in the first leg means Manchester United should have a favourable chance of advancing in the Champions League when the round-of-16 tie heads to Old Trafford on Tuesday.

Historically, 21 of the 30 teams to advance from a 0-0 draw in the first leg of the knockout rounds of the Champions League have done so with the return leg at home.

That includes United, who have been in that situation five times -- and who have advanced to the next round with a victory at home in the second leg on three occasions.

Manchester United will try to advance from a 0-0 first leg for the fourth time in six tries.

Winning the return leg at home also seems to have an additional benefit, as five of the seven teams to do so in the round of 16 have reached the final.

AC Milan, in 2004, were the only team to fail to advance beyond the quarterfinals, and Bayern Munich, in 2015, were the only team knocked out in the semifinals.

Sevilla, who are now unbeaten in 23 of their last 26 home games in European competition -- a span of five seasons -- face a considerable challenge.

The last team to advance in any knockout stage despite a goalless draw at home in the first leg was Atletico Madrid, who defeated Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge in the semifinals in 2014.

And, the last team to move on after a 0-0 draw at home in the round of 16 was Arsenal, who reached the quarterfinals in 2008 with a 2-0 victory against Milan at the San Siro.

The first leg was also notable as United manager Jose Mourinho recorded his 10th goalless draw in Champions League knockout games.
