Dempsey ties Donovan's U.S. goal-scoring record: Inside the numbers
With his goal vs. Costa Rica on Saturday, Clint Dempsey tied Landon Donovan as the United States' all-time leading scorer. But how, when and in what circumstances have Dempsey's 57 national team goals come about?
Goals against 29 different countries...
Saturday's effort was Dempsey's fourth against Los Ticos, ranking them fourth - in a tie with Panama -- among nations against which he has scored the most. Honduras (seven) top the list, followed by Guatemala (six) and Cuba (five).
Dempsey has scored twice apiece vs. Barbados, Brazil, England, Germany, Ghana, Jamaica and Turkey, and he has single goals against 17 other countries, including Italy and Spain. Curiously, though, he has not scored in 10 games against the United States' archrival, Mexico.
... and in all types of games
Dempsey's first goal for his country came on May 28, 2005, in a 2-1 loss to England in a friendly in Chicago. Since then, the 34-year-old has netted in just about every type of international game imaginable.
In all, 25 of Dempsey's goals have given the U.S. a lead, while 23 extended an existing advantage. A further six have tied games and three reduced the deficit for his side.
A threat throughout the match
Dempsey's most recent goal came in the 82nd minute, marking the seventh time he has scored in a game's final quarter-hour. However, his most prolific time periods have been at the end of the first half and the start of the second.
Help from his teammates
With four assists apiece, Michael Bradley and Gyasi Zardes lead the way when it comes to those who have set up Dempsey goals. Providers of three assists each are the man with whom he shares the record, Donovan, as well as ex-New England teammate Taylor Twellman, DaMarcus Beasley and Christian Pulisic. And 17 of the goals were unassisted.
By any means necessary
Remember the goal Dempsey scored with his stomach (or chest) vs. Portugal at the 2014 World Cup? Well, that's one of four different body parts he has used to find the net.
16 states and 12 countries
Dempsey likes playing on the West Coast. He has scored nine times in California, by far the most in any one state; his home state of Texas and Illinois come next with four each.
Abroad, Dempsey has four goals in South Africa, spread over the 2009 Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup, and two in both Germany and Brazil.
June scoring surge
A remarkable 22 of Dempsey's 57 goals have come in June, while 10 were netted in July. He has seven in March, six in September, four in February, four in May, three in October and one in November.
