Benfica avoid punishment following Old Trafford fireworks charge

UEFA has announced it has closed disciplinary proceedings against Benfica after fans set off fireworks during their clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Oct. 31.

European football's governing body charged the Portuguese club for their supporters' conduct during United's 2-0 Champions League victory at Old Trafford last month.

However, Benfica, who sit bottom of Group A without a point, will not receive any punishment from UEFA.

A UEFA statement read: "The CEDB [control, ethics and disciplinary body] has decided to close the disciplinary proceedings."

Earlier this season, Basel were fined €12,000 after their fans let off fireworks before their Champions League opener at Old Trafford in September.

St Etienne were fined €50,000 in March after their fans set off fireworks, in addition to charges for throwing objects and the improper conduct of supporters, in their Europa League round-of-32 clash at Old Trafford.
