Rui Vitoria appointed new Benfica coach after Jorge Jesus exit

LISBON, Portugal -- Portuguese coach Rui Vitoria is taking charge at Benfica, where Jorge Jesus quit two weeks ago and moved to crosstown rivals Sporting Lisbon.

Vitoria has signed a three-year contract with Benfica, the Lisbon club confirmed on Monday.

The 45-year-old was previously a youth coach at the Stadium of Light and most recently was coach of Guimaraes, which finished fifth last season in the Portuguese league.

Jesus led Benfica to the Portuguese title in the last two seasons and was the club's most successful coach.

Vitoria will make his debut in the Champions League next season.
