Adel Taarabt joins Benfica on a five-year deal after QPR release

Adel Taarabt has joined Benfica on a five-year deal, after being released by Queens Park Rangers following their relegated from the Premier League at the end of the season.

Taarabt, 26,  made only three league starts and four substitute appearances in a season during which then-QPR manager Harry Redknapp criticised him over his weight and fitness.

The Morocco international spent time on loan with Fulham and AC Milan during the 2013-14 season but has not impressed during his spell in England.

Benfica won the Portuguese league this season, for the second time in a row, while long-serving manager Jorge Jesus was replaced by Rui Vitoria after he left for local rivals Sporting Lisbon.
