Roberto Martinez 'delighted' by Belgium's team play in Cyprus win

Belgium left new manager Roberto Martinez "delighted" after beating Cyprus 3-0 to open their UEFA World Cup qualifying campaign for a berth in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

First- and second-half goals from Romelu Lukaku and a late insurance goal from Yannick Carrasco helped Martinez's team ease to the final scoreline.

Martinez's first match in charge ended in dubious fashion, as Belgium were outplayed and dominated in a 2-0 friendly loss to Spain last Thursday.

But the team responded in Nicosia to earn all three points and get qualification for Russia off on the right foot.

Martinez told reporters after the match: "We did not expect an easy match in difficult conditions, but we won this match by three clear goals, we missed a penalty and few opportunities.

"In addition, our new defence did not concede a goal. We were quite present defensively, very good in construction, in the reactions.

"In short, we were good as a team. We still have to improve, that's normal, but now in a different system, with the will and the courage of my players, I am very happy.

"We must work several aspects of our game to improve certain points, especially to erase the few moments of indecision.

"But, on the whole, I was pleased with the attitude and efforts of my players in this new system. I'm delighted.

"The fans were also behind us and I'm really happy to go home with this result."

Belgium's next qualifier comes on Friday Oct. 7, when they host Bosnia and Herzegovina at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.
