Louis van Gaal 'a potential candidate' for Belgium manager's job

Louis van Gaal will be considered to replace Marc Wilmots as Belgium manager if he applies for the role, according to Francois De Keersemacker, the president of the Belgian FA.

Former Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Ajax boss Van Gaal has taken charge of the Netherlands' national team on two separate occasions and is currently available after leaving Manchester United at the end of last season.

Francois De Keersemacker, the president of the Belgian FA, told reporters on Friday: "Van Gaal might be a potential candidate. We will see if he puts himself forward as a candidate. If he does then we will evaluate his candidacy."

Van Gaal's candidacy will be helped by his success with Netherlands, whom he led to the semifinals of the 2014 World Cup, according to the Belgian FA's technical director Chris van Puyvelde who wants the Red Devils' next manager to have experience on the international stage.

"It's an open process; I expect my mailbox is going to be flooded [with applications]," Van Puyvelde told a news conference. "We want a candidate to have experience and to have already achieved results in international football. He must play modern football.

"He must show tactical acumen and flexibility to adapt because no one game or no opponent are ever the same. He must also deliver a high-performance environment because the players he is working with are used to working at a high level.

"We have a special generation and they need to be allowed to also take decisions of their own."
