Belgian FA to hold talks over coach Marc Wilmots after Euro 2016 exit

The Belgian Football Association is to hold talks about the future of coach Marc Wilmots after Friday night's Euro 2016 quarterfinal defeat to Wales.

Belgium, ranked second in the world, took the lead through Radja Nainggolan but lost 3-1 as Ashley Williams, Hal Robson-Kanu and Sam Vokes struck for Wales.

They would have reached the last four of a major tournament for the first time in 30 years, but the defeat left Wilmots saying he would consider his future.

In a statement reported by Sky Sports, the Belgian FA said: "After consultation between the Federal President and the Chairman, we have decided not to make any hasty decisions but to take a few weeks working on a thorough evaluation of the national team's performance.

"A decision in this regard will be announced when it is made, but should not be expected in the next few days."

Wilmots, appointed in 2012, has two years remaining on the four-year contract he agreed in April 2014.

After the Wales defeat, Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois declined to back Wilmots.

Asked after the game if Belgium needed a new coach, Courtois replied: "This was an opportunity we may not get again. I gave him my opinion in the dressing room. He has to make his own decision."

In his postgame news conference, Wilmots did not say whethe he would stay on.

"I said I'd make my decision after the European Championship. I won't make one straight after the game," he said. "There's a lot of adrenaline going. We'll have to see."

Courtois told VTM that Wilmots used the same tactics as he had in Belgium's opening defeat to Italy, and that the same problems from that game had been apparent on Friday.

"I pointed the finger where it had to be pointed after the game," he told Rtbf. "It's a disappointment because we had a golden chance to go to the final."
