Kevin De Bruyne: I can play well with Eden Hazard for Belgium

Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne says he has no problems linking up with Eden Hazard for Belgium.

Despite winning their Euro 2016 qualifying group ahead of Wales and rising to No. 1 in the world rankings, some local media outlets have been unimpressed with Belgium's performances.

Following a stellar start to his City career, De Bruyne, 24, has already been tipped by his club manager Manuel Pellegrini to succeed Chelsea playmaker Hazard as the Premier League's Footballer of the Year.

But the former Wolfsburg player has dismissed suggestions that he and Hazard are having trouble playing in the same team at international level.

"I think I play well with Eden," he told Belgian TV station RTBF. "There was just one game where it wasn't good. And then it started that 'they can't play together.'

"I never talked about Eden like that. But if we play together and he scores and we win, I'm happy. And when I score and we win, he's happy.

"In the first place, I think it's a bit ridiculous to compare two players on the same team."

Having reached the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, many people expected a young Belgian side to push on and become real contenders to win next summer's European championships in France.

But De Bruyne says he is unconcerned that Belgium did not set the world alight in many of their qualifying matches for Euro 2016.

"Because we played against defensive teams," he explained. "I also think that the media don't have the patience that we do.

"I think we're already playing better in terms of controlling the games. Before Brazil, we played more on the counter attack. Now we're dominating matches for almost the full 90 minutes."
