Belgium coach Marc Wilmots has said he plans to travel to Barcelona to talk to Thomas Vermaelen and find out why he has not yet featured for the club.

Defender Vermaelen joined Barcelona from Arsenal for 15 million euros in the summer but has yet to feature for his new club, with fitness issues having kept him on the sidelines so far.

On the day his transfer was completed, Barca said he had passed a medical with no problems.

But just two days later, a club statement said the 28-year-old was receiving treatment for a hamstring injury picked up while playing for Belgium at the World Cup.

Vermaelen started in a 6-0 exhibition win over an Indonesia under-19 side in late September, scoring an early header and playing for 60 minutes without appearing to have any serious fitness problems.

However, he has yet to play an official game for Barca or even be named in a competitive match squad, despite the club saying in September that he was fit for selection.

Red Devils boss Wilmots told a news conference ahead of his side's friendly against Iceland and Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Wales that he did not know exactly what the situation was.

"I have no idea," he said. "I will visit him in Barcelona after the international break. Then I will now what he really feels."

Asked about the situation at a news conference last week, Barca coach Luis Enrique said: "Any of the responses I have given over these months about how Vermaelen's situation is remain valid. There is no new news."
