Belgian player Tim Nicot dies after cardiac arrest

Belgian club Beerschot Wilrijk have announced the death of 23-year-old defender Tim Nicot after he suffered a cardiac arrest.

The Antwerp club, recently promoted to Belgian football's third tier, had announced over the weekend that Nicot was fighting for his life after suffering cardiac arrest during a match in Hemiksem, and he was subsequently placed into an artificial coma.

On Monday, the club announced on its Twitter account: "KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk is in mourning. Tim Nicot has just died. We wish his family and friends strength."

The club posted an obituary on its official website, praising his efforts as a player and a person, and describing him as an "idol of the supporters."

Beerschot Wilrijk fans are to gather at the club's Olympisch Stadion on Monday evening to sign a book of condolences and pay tribute to Nicot.

The news of Nicot's death comes less than two weeks after 24-year-old Lokeren defender Gregory Mertens died of heart failure after collapsing during a reserve match.
